Every June, socks, mugs, and braai tongs fly off the shelves. Why? Because it's Father's Day — that one special Sunday (15 June 2025) where the world pauses to say: Thanks, Dad. You're the reason I know how to check the oil, grill meat like a boss, and tighten a bolt with way too much force.
But where did this tradition begin?
Father's Day started in the United States in 1910, thanks to Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman from Washington who wanted to honour her single dad — a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone. Inspired by Mother's Day, she rallied for a similar tribute for fathers. The idea took root slowly (much like a dad's reluctance to throw away a broken appliance), but by 1972, it was officially recognised across the US.
When Does the World Celebrate Dad?
• South Africa, UK, USA, India, Nigeria – 3rd Sunday in June
• Germany – Ascension Day (39 days after Easter)
• Australia & New Zealand – 1st Sunday in September
• Thailand – December 5 (birthday of the late King Bhumibol)
• Brazil – 2nd Sunday in August
• Russia – February 23 (Defender of the Fatherland Day)
So while dates may vary, the sentiment is universal.
Why Father's Day Still Matters?
In a world of fast Wi-Fi and even faster opinions, a father's presence — whether biological, step, adopted or chosen — offers something rare: steadiness.
Fathers and father figures often teach us by doing. They show up, fix stuff, and model responsibility (sometimes in the form of confusing financial advice).
They're also key emotional anchors — even if they express love in silent car rides and sandwich offerings.
One Day, A Thousand Memories
So whether your dad taught you to ride a bike, respect your elders— take a moment to reflect.
? What's the best advice your father or father figure ever gave you?
We'd love to hear it. Drop it in the comments — funny, wise or somewhere in between.

My Daddy always told me to be uniquely different, and not follow the crowds in all that I do. I LOVE U DUDE
I loved my dad deeply. He wasn’t just a provider of shelter and food—he was a guardian of my joy. He had this rare gift, the ability to step into a child’s world, to truly be with me in my headspace, laughing, imagining, playing. He didn’t just raise me—he understood me in a way few fathers ever could. My dad had a way of unlocking happiness, even in life’s heaviest moments. Because of him, I learned to sing through the storms—because life has plenty. And through that melody, I discovered the quiet, powerful beauty of simply being alive. Thank you, Dad, for the love, the laughter, and the light. You taught me how to find sunshine even when it rains.
When my dad didn't have my hand...he had my back.
My dad always said no matter how many times you fall in life remember to always get up because you are not meant to be at the bottom.
To be the best possible version of yourself.
